National Fullbore Captain Mahendra Persaud says he is satisfied with his 83rd place finish out of 362 of the best competitors in the world at the NRA US Fullbore National Individual Championships which ended at Camp Perry, Ohio yesterday.
Having entered the final day placed at 41st, Persaud had a good shoot at the penultimate 600 yards range of 74-5 but at the final range, 1000 yards, did not fear that well as he recorded a score of 70-3 which resulted in his bid to finish in the top 50, wiped out.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Persaud noted that he felt he did well given that it was his first time shooting at Camp Perry like many of the other West Indian shooters in Ohio.
“I think it was a decent performance, I was hoping to do better but as fate would have it, I have to live with the results because that’s how it goes. I thought I shot well over the three days, I handled the wind pretty well and was getting off decent shots, which was most important.”
Persaud who shot the only possible among the trio that represented the West Indies; the others being Lennox Braithwaite and Norris Gomez; said he is confident that the three will combine well for the West Indies in the America match which will see the Caribbean represented by the best eight shooters, tomorrow.
“Lennox, Norris and I who would have shot in the US National Individuals would do pretty good in the team match. The other guys are going into this game without a practice session and that’s the only worry I have but we will have to work hard, put our best foot forward and I think we will get some good results.”
Persaud who has been named Vice Captain of the West Indies team believes that the equipment that his colleagues have acquired is on par with those of the best shooters in the world.
“It boils down to knowing the ranges competing against the others. All of us, I think it is our first time here and even for the Americans and the British who have been here many times, the conditions have been a bit difficult. For us to have performed how we did over the past three days, I think it is s feather in our caps.”
