As competitors continue to confirm their participation, Group 2 driver Ryan Rahaman added his name to the list of drivers who will compete in the Group 2 category at the August 9 Guyana Motor Racing 7 Sports Club ‘National
Race of Champions’ Meet, at the South Dakota Circuit.
The young Rahaman, who hails from a family of racing drivers including his father Jad and Uncle Ray among others speaking with this newspaper yesterday at the team garage on Sandy Babb Street, Kitty said that the car’s preparation is in full mode and he expects to be competition ready come race day.
“As you know we went to Trinidad and did not fare that good and that was because our speed in the straightaways was not on par with the other cars so our chances of doing well was handicapped by our inability to generate the speed of the other cars in the race,” Rahaman disclosed.
He, however, revealed that the team is doing the necessary modifications to enable the car to perform at optimum levels so as to increase their chances of doing well at the upcoming Meet.
Rahaman, who has also competed in the Group 3 and 4 categories said that the change in rules, while he is not going to question its legality, has placed him in an awkward position where he cannot compete in the Group 3 division, but at the same time does not have the speed to challenge the likes of the Jeffreys (Kevin and Kristian), Andrew King and many others whose machines clearly possess far more horsepower than his, referring to his Ford Cosworth car.
The young Rahaman, however, did indicate that he will be formidable in the Group 2 division and issued a warning to every other competitor that takes to the grid that they will have to pull out all the stops to prevent him from dominating the day’s events.
Rahaman said that he will be piloting a Ford Escort and when this newspaper visited the team’s location extensive work was being done to get it ready for Sunday’s showdown.
