Three armed bandits who attempted to rob a family a short distance from the Coast Guard base in Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, had their luck run out when one of them was captured. In fact, the trigger of one of the gunmen’s weapon snapped as he attempted to shoot the homeowner, forcing his other two colleagues to flee. As he attempted to also make his getaway, he was pelted with a cutlass forcing him to fall.
The bandit whose name was given as Michael Embrack called “Duckman or Mike,” 30, of Fort Ordnance Housing Scheme, East Canje, Berbice, is a known felon and was out on bail for a number of misdemeanours. He was found with one Smith and Wesson 40 Pistol, and six (6) live 9mm rounds.
Police say that the offence was committed on 48-year-old Gordon Gomes of Lot 54 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice, by three unidentifiable masked men armed with handguns and a cutlass.
According to information, Gomes lives with his wife Janice La Rose, a housewife, and two daughters, Kyrandra Gomes and Kacya Gomes, in a one-flat concrete house.
The family was at home when the premises was invaded by three masked men. They first attacked Kyrandra Gomes who was on one of the verandahs. She was held at gunpoint and taken into the house through an open door of the verandah. The men started to demand money and jewellery. The bandits subsequently held her mother, who was in the kitchen, at gunpoint, and continued their demand for valuables.
In the meantime, Gordon Gomes who was in another part of the house had observed what was happening and started to shout for thief, alerting Coast Guard ranks, who are based nearby.
One of the bandits dealt him a chop to the left side of his head after which he pointed his gun at Gomes and pulled the trigger, which snapped.
Upon seeing that, the other two bandits then ran out of the house and made good their escape. In the meanwhile Kacya Gomes, who was in the bedroom ran out of the house towards the Coast Guard Base and informed them of what had happened. The bandit who chopped the father also ran out of the house and while running down the stairway Kyrandra Gomes pelted him with a cutlass, which hit him on his right foot causing him to fall to the ground. By then some members of the Coast Guard had arrived and manage to arrest the thief. He was later identified as Michael Embrack.
The injured Gomes and Embrack were both escorted to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where they were seen by a doctor on duty and admitted. Gomes’ condition has been regarded as serious but stable. Embrack, sustained injuries to his right foot and left hand. He is being held under guard at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. His condition is said to be stable.
Investigations are continuing.
