Police are investigating what is believed to be a major fraud to the tune of over $120M at the Public Service Ministry.
While refusing to “name a (former) Minister directly”, Government yesterday admitted that the Ministry has again come under scrutiny. This time, “tens of millions” appear to be missing.
The Ministry was headed by Dr. Jennifer Westford and has been making the news for a number of missing vehicles.
Dr. Westford appeared in court yesterday with her former assistant, Margaret Cummings, to face charges relating to the attempted theft of eight Government-owned vehicles during the run-up to the May 11 elections. Both were granted bail.
Speaking during the Government’s weekly post-Cabinet press conference, Minister of Governance, Raphael Trotman, hinted that the figure may be in the vicinity of $120M in cash.
He warned that there is an ongoing investigation with things “bubbling up from the deep” by the day. He stressed that he is not “pinpointing a Minister”, but rather attention is being paid to the activities of the Ministry.
A senior Government official said that monies were withdrawn over a period of time, reportedly for use in the various regions. However, while the money was withdrawn, it was not delivered to where it was supposed to go.
Government officials were tightlipped but said that they believe the monies were stolen, and that is why the matter has been handed over to the police.
