– Mackenzie High win historic first title
By Edison Jefford
Kwakwani Secondary School continued its dominance of schools’ basketball Sunday night when the institution won its fifth National Schools’ Basketball Festival (NSBF) title, bouncing away as winners in three categories at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
In addition, more history was created on the final night of the 2015 national competition when an enterprising Mackenzie High School won its first NSBF title in the U-14 category which ensured that Region 10 took home the four titles that were up for grabs.
Mackenzie High thrashed St. Rose’s High 49-30 with Yonnick Tappin pouring in 19 points with nine rebounds. Isaiah Adams supported with 10 points. For St. Rose’s, guard Kwesi Roberts had 13 points and eight rebounds while Anthony Yansen had six points.
Then in the Under-16 competition, Kwakwani squeezed pass Mackenzie High School 46-41 with guard, Ronaldo Patoir pouring in 18 points, and forward, Jamal Gilkes adding 12 points, coupled with eight rebounds. Tyrese Mitchell had 19 points for Mackenzie High.
Kwakwani continued its march with a 23-4 rout of Marian Academy in the Girls’ competition as Jenelle Belle scored nine and A. Gladstone eight points in the win. Georgina Vyphuis and Jada Mohan were the scorers for Marian Academy.
Kwakwani won its third title in the featured U-19 game when it thrashed St. Rose’s High 80-65 with shooting guard, Stanton Rose pouring in 21 points that included five three-pointers. Kerrol Phillips scored 13 points, while Troy David had 10 points.
Despite his heroics, National junior player and Pacesetters guard, Nathan Saul could not avoid a defeat with 32 individual points. Shemar Huntley scored 11 points, while Anfernee Jervis added 10 points and nine rebounds.
The first half of the featured game gave the spectators the impression that they were in for some special treat after Kwakwaki assumed a 35-30 lead at halftime. However, that hope diminished when Kwakwani went on a 13-6 run in the first five minutes of the second half as David nailed a huge three-point jumper to extend the advantage.
Rose further pushed the lead to 53-36 with another jumper from ‘downtown’. Saul went to work for St. Rose’s, which helped reduced the lead. However, Kwakwani kept scoring with Rose and Floyd Edmond entertaining patrons with impressive moves.
St. Rose’s, despite an 8-4 mini run in the closing minutes, just could not quell the offence of the Kwakwani unit on the defensive end. The efficiency of Kwakwani ensured that they remain the most dominant NSBF participant in the 10-year history of the competition.
