Despite missing a few key players from last year due to the age eligibility rule, defending champions Christianburg / Wismar still exhibited the tenacity of champions after eliminating a stubborn Uilvlugt Secondary side 3-1 on penalty kicks to move into the quarter-finals of this year’s Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Competition.
Playing before another large crowd at the Wisburg ground, the champs were made to fight against a team that produced a dogged defensive performance, but failed to create chances in the attacking third.
Christianburg / Wismar whose entire forward line from last year could not play in this year’s tournament created quite a number of chances, but errant shooting combined with a bit of bad luck kept them off the scoresheet during regulation time, before some magnificent goalkeeping by their hero Tevin Crawford enabled them to live to fight another day.
Crawford was simply magnificent between the uprights, pulling off two spectacular saves from the first three Uitvlugt players, before one was sprayed wide, giving them a distinct advantage heading into the fourth kick which the opposition scored.
Omar Brewley, who had come on as substitute shortly before full time then strode up confidently to deliver a crushing right-footer past the desperate dive of the Uitvlugt who could only watch the ball race past him and the champs supporters rush on to the field in wild celebrations.
The champs seemed to start out a bit tentative and lost possession quite easily to the tall and strong looking Uitvlugt unit, before coming into their own.
They had two chances to take the lead, but both efforts ended high over the crossbar, while another hit the crossbar and rebounded into play.
Urged on by the partisan crowd, Christianburg /Wismar made some threatening incursions, but good goalkeeping and stout defending put paid to their chances and the game stayed deadlocked until the final whistle sounded to signal penalty kicks.
