Dametry Grant netted twice in the second half to give Annadale Secondary of East Coast Demerara a hard fought 2-1 victory over Friendship Secondary of East Bank Demerara when the Digicel National Schools’ football championship continued yesterday at Golden Grove.
After a lackluster start to the Region four final, Friendship gradually grew in confidence and Kevin Sobers gave them the lead in the 40th minute. After receiving a pass from midfield, Sobers beat goalkeeper Kendance Cooper to his left from inside the area.
Annadale showed more vigor after the break and Grant drew them level in the 49th minute. The forward converted from the spot after his side was awarded a penalty when Sobers handled the ball inside the area. In contrast to the first half, both teams made several raids on goal, but failed to find the back of the net as their defence stood firm. However a blunder from Friendship goalkeeper Andrew Ramsey 12 minutes from time handed Annadale their entrance into the next round. Ramsey failed to gather the ball cleanly after Jan Dooker sent his free kick from the right side of the field into the area and Grant made most of the opportunity to give his team the lead, much to the delight of fans.
The goal lifted the confidence of Annadale players and Dooker almost provided them with their third goal shortly after, but Ramsey did well to tip his free kick over the bar. Friendship tried desperately for an equaliser as they made several runs at goal, but were denied by their opponents’ defence and Cooper.
Annadale’s Trioni Semple had a shot from the left side of the box knocked away by Ramsey, while Grant was denied by the advancing goalkeeper after Jemar Robinson fed him a pass inside the area. (Zaheer Mohamed)
