Deon Sunthgolam who is charged with the murder of businessman Terrence Malcolm McLean called “Scatchy” 62, of Sheet Anchor, East Canje; Berbice, has been committed to stand trial in the next session of the Berbice High Court.
Sunthgolam, 38, a goldsmith and father of one, of Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Berbice, is accused of murdering McLean between Monday 1st and Wednesday 3rd of December, last, at his home.
According to Prosecutor Sergeant Phillip Sheriff, Sunthgolam was positively identified during an identification parade as the man who had visited the home of the victim.
The accused has a stall in the New Amsterdam market had been a partner of McLean for some time, and had entered into some new business deals with him. It is understood that the accused was indebted to the man for a substantial sum of money which he was finding difficulty in repaying. Sunthgolam’s passport and visa were reportedly lodged at Mc Lean’s house as collateral.
Residents had recounted that Sunthgolam had visited McLean twice during the day and had disappeared from his home after the incident. A knife, tissues and other materials were found at the house.
A post mortem examination gave the cause of death as shock and haemorrhage due to multiple stab wounds.
