– rewards top four Education graduates
“In any tertiary institution the library is a significant aspect,” said Principal of the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), Ms Viola Rowe, as she addressed a gathering at a simple ceremony convened in the conference room of the Institution yesterday.
The occasion was a handing over ceremony which saw the Guyana Improving Teacher Education Project (GITEP) endowing the CPCE with a quantity of books valued in excess of $12 million, projectors and digital cameras.
Even as she regarded the donation as significant, Rowe stressed the importance of a library, asserting that “if we are pushing for research, if we are pushing for relevance, if we are pushing for currency, we have to have the required materials for our students.”
“We cannot engage in research, we cannot demand of our lecturers and our students to be relevant, and we do not provide you with some of the fundamental materials that you require,” Rowe emphasised. She noted too that more than the books, the other supportive equipment and materials will also be instrumental to aid CPCE’s “upward move.”
CPCE, she said, is on its way to becoming a more “powerful learning environment.”
According to GITEP Coordinator, Mr Tota Mangar, the support to CPCE is part of GITEP’s developmental objective of assisting the Ministry of Education, and by extension, the Government of Guyana, to improve the effectiveness and the efficiency in the delivery of quality teacher education. He therefore noted that the books and equipment presented are directly linked at improving the library holdings at CPCE, its satellite centres and the learning resource centres in support of research, independent learning and the professional development of teacher educators and students alike.
The move, Mangar said, is also aimed at aiding in the integration of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the teaching and learning process, as well as supporting the transition of dual mode delivery of the initial teacher training programmes.
But the support was not randomly derived. According to Mangar, at an early stage of GITEP, the services of a consultant was acquired to embark on a programme to inventorise CPCE’s existing library stock and to interview administrators, heads of departments and other staff, and to make recommendations relating to an improved library holdings.
“To this end an impressive list of books were identified to be purchased,” said Mangar, who related that these were acquired from Mallory International in the United Kingdom through international competitive bidding.
Over at the University of Guyana’s Education Lecture Theatre, yesterday, too, Mangar handed over another quantity of books and equipment intended for the Faculty of Education and Humanities.
At a ceremony there, Dean of the Faculty, Alim Hosein said that “this is a very good day for education…not just for education generally, but for the Faculty, and I dare say the entire University, because I am sure that when the Faculty benefits the University benefits.”
Speaking at both handing over ceremonies yesterday was Chief Education Officer, Olato Sam. While he lauded the collaboration between CPCE and UG, Sam noted that there is still need for more to be done.
“I think there is still a bit of a fence that separates CPCE and UG, and there is still more that can be done. I would love to know that as a result of this engagement that our CPCE students have access to the University library and that we can fashion some arrangement to accommodate that,” stated the CEO.
Aside from the presentation of books and equipment to the two institutions yesterday, GITEP also presented monetary awards to the four top performing students in Education who graduated last year. Among those awarded were Akeem Wilson (GPA 3.68), James Straker (GPA 3.63), Krishna Kumar (3.59 GPA) and Surojini Bisnauth (GPA 3.55).
