Representatives of US-owned Anadarko Petroleum Corporation yesterday met with Minister of Governance, Raphael Trotman, reiterating the entity’s interest in restarting oil exploration activities in Guyana.
The Anadarko representatives were Luis Derrota, Associate General Counsel and Richard Lapin, International Business Development, while Trotman’s team included officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, which he has responsibilities for, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, according to a Government statement, the US Company updated the Minister on the proposed work programme for the development of hydrocarbons in Guyana.

“The representatives reaffirmed their commitment to explore their prospecting area and were supportive of Guyana’s efforts to have a peaceful resolution to the boundary dispute with Venezuela.”
Trotman, according to the statement, assured the representatives of Anadarko that the government will continue to take relevant measures to preserve the country’s sovereignty.
In October 2013, an armed Venezuelan navy vessel entered Guyana waters and forced a seismic survey vessel hired by Anadarko to cease its activities. The Venezuela navy detained the survey ship. The move had delayed explorations by Anadarko, one of several companies licensed to search for oil.
Anadarko’s renewed interest comes at a time when relations between Guyana and Venezuela are at an all-time low after the latter revived claims on territory of this country.
Venezuela has recalled its ambassador and threatened to review its diplomatic ties.
