As part of its corporate responsibility Scotiabank Robb Street branch has throw its support behind the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) rendering assistance to three of its talented young players.
The entity yesterday presented a cheque to the club which will be used to purchase gears for Alphius Bookie, Qumar Torrington and Sachin Singh who have been selected to represent Guyana at the Regional U15 tournament which is set to start here on July 20.
Speaking at the ceremony, Scotia bank manager Brian Hackett said that they have started a partnership with the club particularly with the young players.
“What we have been doing is looking at financing particular areas in order for the young players to achieve their goals. So with this presentation we have given birth to our partnership with the organization,” he stated.
He said that the bank will continue to assist with other activities and get involved in the general development of the youths to ensure that their education and cricket go hand in hand.
“We plan to work closely with DCC in making this a reality. So what we need to do is to identify the cricketers with the discipline, knowledge and skill and help them to move on to the next level.”
Hackett pointed out that this initial part of their agreement is to make sure that cricketers acquire the gears to play the game adding that Scotiabank is always happy to support the youths.
“It has always been part of our passion because the development of the sport rests with the youths and we are looking for opportunities to contribute,” he said.
President of the club Alfred Mentore explained that this venture is important because it ensures that the players are well equip for tournaments, adding that they are thankful not only to Scotiabank but other sponsors who have assisted the club. He stated that the club is in the business of promoting both academics and sport. “Sport comes under Education so this is being consistent with the Government objective which will assist the youngsters to become well rounded individuals. He made reference to one of their former player Sunil Rupee whom he said was admitted into a university in England because represented Guyana. Mentore informed that the club plans to reward its members who succeed at the CSEC exam and host a coaching clinic in August.
Bookie who part of last year’s Guyana victorious U15 team feels that the venture will motivate the players. “We are very thankful for this because without the corporate support we would not have proper gears and facilities to play the game.”
