Amidst the heavy rainfall and winds that rocked the city last week, business proprietors in the Croal Street, Stabroek area are calling on the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) to remove a decayed utility pole they deem a hazard to their businesses.
The pole which is located in front of the SINO Restaurant (just in front of the route 40 bus park) has since been infested by termites and completely rotten.
According to the proprietors, the power company seems to be reluctant to deal with the issue as they have been making several complaints about the pole since last year.
The area is usually a busy thoroughfare on a daily basis, with vehicles traversing back and forth.
Proprietor of SINO restaurant said that he is fearful that the pole which is leaning would fall and cause injuries to passersby and damage vehicles parked in the area.
He also stressed that it is a danger to several businesses in the area since it can collapse at any time and cause fires. He added that it can even electrocute vendors selling in the vicinity should it fall.
As such, the business owners believe that the entire situation could have been avoided if GPL had paid attention to their complaints. The frustrated business owners are questioning why GPL is allowing weakened and rotten poles to remain in service.
