Forward Nehemiah Gomes scored twice in the first half as North Georgetown Secondary overcame St. Winifred 4-3 when the Digicel National Schools football championships continued yesterday at the Ministry of Education
ground.
North Georgetown dictated the proceedings early on and Gomes put them ahead in the 9th minute when he latched on to a pass from Vincent Willings and fired home from inside the 18-yard box. North Georgetown continued to show aggression and Gomes doubled the lead in the 20th, blasting home his free kick 20 yards from goal.
Reuben Miller inked his name on the score sheet in the 35th minute when he slotted home a pass from the energetic Willings from just outside the box to give North Georgetown a 3-0 lead at half time.
St. Winifred showed more purpose after the interval, but it was North Georgetown who found the back of the net once again. Their captain Christopher Waddell showed his skills beating two defenders before firing home from inside the area.
However this did not deter St. Winifred lads and Deandre Smith gave them some hope when he netted in the 50th minute before Andrew Holder scored their second in the 55th. As it came down to the homestretch, St. Winifred found momentum and at times outplayed their opponents. Stephan Reynolds’ last minute strike gave his team to something to cheer about although they ended up on the wrong side of the result. (Zaheer Mohamed)
