Police have detained three men, including two brothers, in custody in connection with the murder of shopkeeper Rampersaud Shivcharan, who was shot dead at his Lot 9 Ankerville, Port Mourant, Corentyne residence
around 19.30 hrs on Sunday.
The men were reportedly detained after a relative of the slain grocer provided police with information about money that was owed to the family.
Shivcharan, a 41-year-old father of three, who ran Debbie’s Grocery and Liquor shop, was found lying in a pool of blood in a passageway.
A police release stated that Shivcharran was in his shop when two men armed with firearms entered the premises. The men approached the businessman and shot him during a scuffle.
He was taken to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
But although the building was ransacked, police sources said that the killers made no attempt to rob their victim.
Some of Shivcharan’s relatives confirmed that the killers left a large sum of cash and other valuables untouched.
The gunmen struck during a power failure and the grocer was reportedly tending to his customers by candle-light.
According to an eyewitness the men, who were armed, walked into the shop at around 19.30 hrs on Sunday and ordered everybody to be quiet. They then shot Shivcharan in the region of his heart.
Two of Shivcharan’s children were present, but they escaped to a neighbour’s house.
The man’s wife Debbie Rampersaud, who was overseas, returned home at around 06:00 hrs yesterday.
She refuted reports that she and her husband were not on good terms, but said she did not have a good relationship with some of her in-laws.
She also claimed that some individuals had threatened the family and had owed them large sums of money. The woman also told reporters that robbers had targeted the family before.
She claimed that the police had proved to be of little help, although the family had provided surveillance footage of the attacks.
The police are looking at a number of theories and are still to come up with a motive for the brutal murder.
A post mortem examination is expected to be performed on the body today.
