Ashley Khalil held her nerve against current Junior National champion Akeila Wiltshire to set up a final match clash with Nicolette Fernandes last night in the Digicel Senior National Squash Championship at the Georgetown Club courts. Wiltshire matched her opponent stroke for stroke but for a few misdirected backhand volleys, yet ultimately the power and experience of Khalil trumped the left handed Junior.
Tournament favorite Nicolette Fernandes has returned home for the summer and end of Squash season and has brought with her, her training partner. The super fit 33-year-old Fernandes remained unscathed in the tournament, dispatching Ashley DeGroot in the other women’s semifinal in straight games to set up an exciting final between Guyana’s top seeded player and the younger Khalil.
Meanwhile, Jason Ray Khalil played a dominant match when he defeated Peter Michael DeGroot, with the latter unable to win a point in either of the last two games of the semifinal showdown.
Nyron Joseph outran the skillful Regan Pollard in the other male semifinal to win the match 3-0 in a match which highlighted the importance of the fitness factor in high level squash. Notably, several long rallies were followed by unforced errors by the clearly winded Pollard, who was treated to an exhibition of agility and athleticism by the nimble Joseph.
In other results, veteran Alwyn Callender continued to dominate that category with a 3-0 win over Medhi Ramdhani, while Joshua Abdool and Jonathan Hohenkirk walked away with 3-0 victories of their own in their hunt for third and fourth places. The finals of the tournament was slated for yesterday.
