– slain man’s fiancée lauds police, victim laid to rest
Jason Cort’s killers went to his home to commit a robbery.
But when he reached for his gun to defend himself, one of the robbers shot him dead.
This is what three detained men have told detectives about their deadly confrontation, two Wednesdays ago, with the 27-year-old Rubis Accounts Executive at his Jamoon Drive, Meadow Brook residence.
Kaieteur News understands that while the men admitted to committing the act, they claimed that their intention was merely to rob their victim.
“All three have confessed to being there and committing the act,” a senior police official told Kaieteur News. “Their intention was to rob their victim, but he drew his firearm and they shot him.”
Two of the suspects are Tucville residents, while the third is from Stevedore Housing Scheme. They are said to be aged 40, 24 and 21. Cort’s mobile phone was found on one of the suspects, who also made off with Cort’s licensed firearm, gold band, chain and ring, mobile phone and an Xbox console.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum disclosed that the investigation was conducted by the Force’s major crime investigation unit, which operates out of CID Headquarters, Eve Leary.
The investigators have managed to solve the case in just over a week, and Cort’s fiancée, Shauna Garraway, yesterday lauded the police team, even as she prepared to lay her fiancé to rest.
“I am relieved, and I appreciate how fast they got results, but Jason is gone and is not coming back,”
Jason Cort was shot in the chest at around 22.30 hrs last week Wednesday, shortly after he had arrived home with his fiancée. She believes that the killers entered via a kitchen door that Cort had left open.
Cort’s fiancée, Shauna Garraway, had told Kaieteur News that after they had arrived home, she went to the top flat, while Cort remained in the bottom flat.
“I was about to come downstairs when I heard a gunshot. I then heard Jason cry out, and someone (else) said ‘where the money? Give me the money.”
Garraway said that she hid under a bed, while trying to contact the police, relatives and friends.
A family friend eventually arrived and found Cort lying in the house, near the southern doorway in the bottom flat. The wounded man was rushed to the Balwant Singh Hospital, where he succumbed.
