The Extraordinary Congress of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) held yesterday at the Marriott Hotel by majority decision approved the lifting of the suspension that was imposed on Executive Members of the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) on January 17, 2014 at a Special Extraordinary Congress.
The members who have received a new lease on their administrative careers are former President Sharma Solomon who was previously suspended for 8 years, while respective 5 year suspensions were imposed on Collie Hercules, Claude Williams, Wainewright Bethune, Rawle Johnson, Jeffrey Trotman, Ansawatt Barrett, Patrick Dey, Terrence Mitchell and Clive Brusche.
The officials had appealed their suspension by way of letter to the GFF Normalisation Committee on January 30, 2015. The GFF Normalisation Committee submitted a motion to the members at yesterday’s Extraordinary Congress which was deliberated upon after which the members voted by way of majority to lift the respective suspensions with immediate effect.
Only the Georgetown Football Association abstained from the vote. The officials from Linden were suspended by the Christopher Matthias led GFF for playing their Final on January 1, 2014 at the MSC Ground, simultaneously with the GFA’s Banks Beer Cup Finals at the Guyana National Stadium.
Congress at the time believed that the two should not have been played on the same day but the UDFA explained that their Finals being played on New Year’s Day, 2014 meant a lot to the Linden community and as such, went ahead with same.
It was also argued by Linden that a final in Linden would not be a hindrance to the finals being played 65 miles away.
The members all agreed that they were happy to welcome back the administrators to serve since Guyana’s football needs everyone on board going forward.
Members present were Rupununi Football Association, Berbice Football Association, East Demerara Football Association, Georgetown Football Association, East Bank Football Association, West Demerara Football Association, Guyana Football Referees Council, National Association of Women’s Football and the Guyana Football Coaches Association.
