Veteran Cyclist, Motor Bike Rider and Boat Racer Pat Holder is still actively involved with the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMRC) despite overcoming several series injuries including a broken Collar Bone.
The affable Holder recently paid a courtesy call to Guyana’s eighth Executive President and ninth overall, Brigadier David Granger and presented the Head-of-State with the second trophy he ever won, 66 years ago for Cycling.
The visit to the Office of the Presidency to meet with the Nation’s leader was influenced by the fact that President Granger attended Primary school in Queenstown where both the 69-year-old Granger and Holder, now 81, lived during their younger days.
“President Granger lived two blocks away from where I lived and I was very happy when he became President. I remember all the students from Moravian Primary would pass by my house and see my trophies. I am sure he was one of them so I decided to go and congratulate him and give him one of my trophies,” the former racer explained.
Holder said the trophy he presented to the President was one he had won while riding with a broken Collar Bone in Berbice.
“We talked about the good old days in Queenstown and I wished him well and told him I had prayed for God to bless him with wisdom and responsibility to be a good leader of Guyana. He said he would be happy if more former sportspersons remained involved in the promotion of sports when they retire,” the garrulous Holder informed.
