Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) came from behind to register a dramatic 3-2 triumph in a penalty shootout to eliminate defending Region 6 champion Vrymen’s Erven in this year’s Digicel Nationwide Schools Football
Competition yesterday, at Burnham Park in Berbice.
Watched by a fair-sized crowd, the drama unfolded in four minutes as BEI who were staring defeat after trailing 3-0 with ten minutes left in regulation time produced a astounding performance to net three goals and force a penalty shootout which they duly won to sink the hearts of the Vrymen’s Erven team and supporters.
It started when Colvis Burnett beat the goalkeeper from close range following a scrimmage in the goal area in the 82nd minute of play. Despite the late response many still felt that the game was home and dry for Vrymen’s Erven, but BEI had other ideas and netted their second goal compliments of a penalty after a player was fouled inside the ‘Red Zone’ forcing the referee to order a spot kick which was scored on the second attempt.
The first attempt which was missed by the opposing goalkeeper was ordered to be retaken after the referee ruled that the goalkeeper had moved before the kick was made and Dwaine Alleyne strode up and buried his effort into the right side of the goal.
Just when you thought things could not get worse for Vrymen’s Erven, BEI scored one minute
later through Sheldon McPherson, who raced on to a pass down centre field, outran his markers and despite a valiant effort of narrowing the gap by the advancing goalkeeper, he rounded him expertly, before tapping in from close range to send their supporters into a frenzy of celebration.
The next four minutes saw end to end action, but both backlines stood strong and the score line remained deadlocked at the conclusion of regulation and the next step was to order a penalty shootout which saw BEI prevail and advance.
