Antigua & Barbuda maul Aruba 7-0
Guyana’s Under-23 ‘Golden Jaguars’ lost their opening game of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Olympic Qualifiers, Group 2 to top Caribbean side Cuba 2-0 at the Antigua Recreational ground, Antigua & Barbuda, yesterday afternoon.
Cuba sealed the game very early as they converted in the 7th minute on account of a Frank Manuel Lopez effort with the second and final goal coming four minutes before the half off the boot of Darian Perez.
Guyana started with Anthony Whyte in goal; Joshua Brown, Daniel Whyte, Les Charles Critchlow and William Europe in defense; Kadell Daniel (UK based), Daniel Wilson, Kareem Knights and Trayon Bobb in midfield while up front were Pernell Schultz and Dellon Lanferman.
Moving forward it would be an uphill task for the Guyana side to qualify from the group with only the winner set to advance to the next stage. The Guyanese will now set sights on home team Antigua and Barbuda in their second game tomorrow afternoon at the same venue while they close out on Sunday afternoon against Aruba.
Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz commented on the performance of his charges: “We put up a brave fight against a Cuba team that was more experienced and superior to us in several departments. We battled well and created some chances especially in the second half. However, the experience and composure of the Cubans overwhelmed us.”
Shabazz noted that he was proud of the effort shown by the team and is looking forward to an equally challenging encounter in their match against host Antigua and Barbuda, tomorrow.
The Antiguans mauled Aruba 7-0 in the feature game of the double header. There was a double each for Javon Stevens and Mahlon Romeo with one each from Captain Calaum Martin, Eugene Kirwan and Elijah McDonald.
Antigua and Barbuda are atop the group based on a better goal difference ahead of Cuba.
