An early morning accident shattered the Father’s Day celebrations for the Tularam clan of Unity Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD), when it resulted in the death of one family member.
Anand Tularam, 33 a motorcyclist of Unity, Mahaica, ECD was killed in a three vehicle collision along the East Coast Demerara thoroughfare, in the vicinity of Courbane Park, Annandale.
Police in a press statement, said that initial investigations revealed that Tularam, was involved in an accident with two cars. The accident is said to have occurred at about 03:30 hours, yesterday.
The victim collided with one motorcar that was travelling in the opposite direction when he fell on the roadway and was run over by another vehicle.
Tularam was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. According to the police, one of the drivers is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
Meanwhile, the dead man’s grief stricken relatives related that Tularam, construction worker employed at the Giftland Mall on the East Coast of Demerara, might have met his demise on his way home from a late night rendezvous.
The victim’s sister, Molly Tularam described her younger brother as an easy going person, who worked and took care of their elderly mother.
She told this publication that her brother’s death came as a shock to the entire family. Tularam said that the family received a telephone call at around 3:30hours yesterday morning, informing them of her brother’s mishap.
“They called and asked us to come down to the (Vigilance) Police Station and bring my brother’s (identification) ID card… when me and my two other brothers arrived at the station, an officer came out and told us he was sorry to inform us that our brother had passed away,” she said.
The woman said that the officer presented them with brief information about the accident.
“The police explained that my brother was on his motorcycle when he was hit by one car. The impact, he said pitched him in the air and he fell but another car was coming at the same time and it ran over him after he hit the ground,” she further explained.
Tularam related that the officer told her that while the driver of one car stopped to render assistance to her injured brother, the other vehicle drove away.
“It was a hit and run because the police said the driver of the first car stopped but by that time, there was nothing he could do; the other car had already run over my brother but the driver didn’t stop.”
The woman said that a shattered number plate is only evidence that the police have in their possession to track down the vehicle that drove away. “When we saw my brother’s body at the hospital, we couldn’t even recognize him, except for his clothes and tattoos he has on his arms,” Tularam said.
Although he was not married and had no children of his own, Tularam was beloved by members of his family.
“He must have been coming home from his job because he looks after our mother. She is very sickly, she sits in one place. It is a very sad time for us. My mother is just crying all the time now,” Tularam related as she spoke of her family’s reaction to the tragic news.
The woman said that her brother has now joined their father, who died a few years ago. “Our father got his son for Father’s Day,” a distraught Tularam stated. Anand Tularam leaves to mourn his mother and four siblings.
