Braving soggy conditions underfoot, Hope Secondary rebounded from conceding
an early goal to come away with a workmanlike 3-1 win over a game, but clearly outclassed La Bonne Intention (LBI) as play in the 5th Edition of the Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Competition continued yesterday, at the Victoria Community Centre ground.
Watched by a fair-sized crowd, Hope was led to victory through a brace from the speedy Kevaughn Garnett, whose efforts which included a penalty came in the 18th and 40th minute, while Demel Joseph added the other goal in the 34th minute.
On target for LBI was goalkeeper Rayshawn Simon, who netted a penalty three minutes after the match started. The ground which was heavy in some parts made it difficult for the players to exhibit their true skills and one could say that the conditions was partially responsible for the first goal of the game when a sliding tackle by a Hope defender inside the penalty area resulted in a foul and a spot kick awarded.
Up strode Simon from between the uprights and he buried his fiercely struck shot into the
roof of the net. Undaunted even after trailing so early, Hope attacked relentlessly for the equaliser and while they threatened on occasions, LBI backline held firmly in a stubborn display, before the roles were reversed as Hope was the team to win a penalty this time after Simon was whistled for lunging with both feet off the ground attempting to intercept a through pass inside the red zone.
The ensuing spot kick taken by Garnett blew past the goalkeeper to his right to tie the scores at 1-1. Shortly before the half time whistle sounded, Hope took the lead courtesy of another penalty kick taken by Joseph which he sent low and hard to the left side of the goal past the diving Simon.
The scores remained that way at the half and the prospects of a riveting final period appeared real. On the resumption, both teams looked to maintain their attacking style of play and it took a fantastic free kick from Garnett from about 30 metres out which came as a result of a strong tackle by an opposing defender to place Hope in an even more comfortable position.
LBI won a penalty a few minutes later, but the attempt was struck straight at the goalkeeper who made an easy save to preserve their 3-1 advantage. Hope goalkeeper Dexroy Bristol then made a stunning save from a free kick presnted to LBI, before the final whistle sounded. In the day’s other result: Stewartville beat Endeavour 3-0.
