5th Annual Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Competition ….
By Rawle Welch
New Silvercity commenced their quest for top honours in this year’s Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Competition with a hard fought 3-2 victory over a stubborn Wisburg yesterday at the Wisburg Secondary
School ground in Linden.
Following brief remarks from recently appointed Parliamentarian Jermaine Figueira and Ministry of Education representative Lindley Langhorne the two combatants treated the fans to some exciting football in the opening game of the Region 10 segment.
Compton Caesar gave the homesters the lead after 19 minutes when he raced on to a ball played down the middle to poke his shot past a hesitant New Silvercity goalkeeper, whose slow advance failed to narrow the angle for the speedy striker.
However, undaunted by the early setback, New Silvercity responded six minutes later through Tyreke McAllister, who curled a shot past the defence and out of the reach of a stranded Wisburg goalkeeper after collecting a pass from the left side to level the scores.
The contest remained deadlocked at the half and everyone braced for a riveting final period.
After the resumption, New Silvercity took the lead for the first time in the match when Brian Johnson raced on to a long ball from the back with an opposing defender in hot pursuit, but he cleverly lobbed the ball to a teammate who had sprinted forward and he finished with deadly
accuracy, firing past the keeper in the 50th minute.
They then stretched their advantage further through Shane Haynes, who latched on to a pass from centrefield rounded the advancing goalkeeper, before hitting a wonderful left-footed shot past a scrambling last stop who had no chance of stopping.
The goal which eventually resulted in Wisburg’s Eldridge Williams being red carded for indiscipline after he walked off the field in disgust came in the 58th minute of play.
His ejection, however, brought out a more stubborn display by his teammates as they produced a brave offensive attack that threatened to create goals.
They managed to pull one back in the 66th minute when a goalmouth scrimmage saw Jermaine Moore being left unmarked and he lashed home from close range.
However, New Silvercity also attacked with menace and were lucky not to increase their tally. Hitting the crossbar on one occasion and missing the mark by inches on at least two other occasions, before the final whistle sounded to hand them victory.
The competition resumes today with Mackenzie High taking on Linden Foundation at Wisburg; Tagore tackling Manchester at Skeldon; Tucville play host to David Rose at Tucville ground and Friendship squaring off against Apex at Grove.
All matches start at 15:30 hrs.
Meanwhile, Figueira in his remarks applauded Digicel for being one of the leaders in the development of football locally, while also congratulating reigning champion Christianburg / Wismar for winning the trophy outright following three consecutive championship victories.
He implored on the players to be good ambassadors of the Region as well as make Digicel proud through the exhibition of good discipline throughout the tournament.
Langhorne in his presentation said that it was indeed a privilege to see the commencement of the tournament which according to him has developed into the biggest schools football competition.
“You are the ones who will determine the success of the tournament, especially in this Region and I urge all of you display a high quality of discipline throughout the competition,” Langhorne told the players.
