– Bermuda take revenge for home series loss
The defending champions, Bahamas won convincingly against Guyana 89-69 in their Group B preliminary play of the 2015 Men’s Caribbean Basketball Confederation Championships at the Multi-Sports Complex in Road Town, Tortola.
The Bahamas used a 15-4 run that was ignited by a Kentwan Smith three-pointer at
the 6:12 mark in the first quarter and were able to control the game after that. Smith finished with 18 points on a perfect 7-7 FG and 3-3 from downtown.
Guyana’s efforts were aided by a strong performance by Dave Causway who had a game-high 19 points, including 11 of his team’s 13 points in the third quarter.
Meanwhile, Bermuda, after briefly giving up the lead in the second half, upped its preliminary round record to 1-1 with a 74-65 victory over Guyana, which had beaten the Bermudians in an International Series in Guyana in March.
Guyana slipped to a 0-3 record at the 2015 Caribbean Championships with only Suriname to play. The loss ensures that Guyana will miss the Final Four round.
Bermuda led 15-9 after the first quarter, and after a Keron McKenzie three-pointer tied it for Guyana at 4:08 mark of the second, Bermuda closed out the half on a 9-2 run to lead 32-23 at halftime.
Gordon James then gave Guyana its first lead midway through the first quarter with a three-point play to make it 38-36 with 5:06 left in the third. But Bermuda went on a 5-0 run of its own to retake the lead.
A three-pointer from Jason Simons with 40 seconds left in the third period stretched the lead to seven before the quarter ended with Bermuda up 50-45.
James got his team to within two with another three-point play at the 7:01 mark of the fourth quarter, making the score 52-50, and then to within four at 61-57 with 4:19 to play, but Guyana would get no closer, scoring just two points over the next 2:19.
Sullivan Philips led Bermuda with 24 points and 11 rebounds while Christopher Crumpler scored 16, and Yusef Riley added 11 points. James led Guyana with 22 points. (caribbeanbasketball.com)
