The residents of the East Ruimveldt Market Street and California Square are pleading with the relevant authorities to assist them with their ongoing efforts of restoring their community to its former glory.
Residents of the area recently engaged themselves in a community clean-up campaign. They started from as early as 6:00 hrs in an effort to clean as much as they could, given that their resources were limited.
The campaign was a collaborative effort involving the residents and the Mayor and City Council (M&CC). The people wanted to ensure that they make a difference in their community.
Some residents said this campaign was started because of the recent flooding in the area which saw most persons counting their losses. They then decided that the time is now to do something on their own and not wait on the authorities to do something. But the community is still hoping that the new government would offer some assistance.
“We came together and decided to do this clean-up my country campaign… This is to enhance our community so that our youths would have a better environment to live in,” said Phillip Knights, resident of East Ruimveldt.
Onika Benjamin also added, “We are mostly working with our youths and they have showed their suppose by coming out to help restore the area to where it once was…They are very dedicated to keeping the area clean and keep the water flowing.”
The activity was a well-orchestrated as residents opted not only to give the manpower but also to provide Tea, Snack and Lunch for the hardworking party.
The organiser of the campaign, Shirley Knights said, “We plan on keeping this Clean-Up initiative at least once every month given that the residents cooperate with each other in order to make it a success.
“We really want to see community uplifted and to have a meeting with the Prime Minister to help with our initiative”.
Members of the community are now calling on residents in other areas to follow by example and clean their surroundings to help in the restoration of the former glory Guyana once was.
