Dear Editor,
Reference is hereby made to the above caption as it relates to the English based quartet of Matthew Briggs, Marcel Barrington, Sam Cox and Neil Danns non-representation of the Golden Jaguars, in Guyana’s opening match of the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers vs St. Vincent (hosts) on 10-06-2015. Editor, it would be remiss of me not to mention that representation of our national football team by overseas born player (s) in earnest began almost fifteen (15) years ago. And at that juncture, though it may be longer (I stand corrected), Naturalization/ Citizenship weren’t an issue then, so how is it an issue now, given the fact that computerization, internet and email were not as popular as it is today.
So, in actuality, the process in seeking the afore-mentioned in my estimation normally begins in the respective country of the player’s birth. This factor would entail a visit to the Consulate, Embassy, or High Commission. While the GFF, from this end prior to the player (s) visit, submits the relevant application. Where did the breakdown occur? Moreover, when it’s taken into serious consideration that visitation by the player (s) during an international friendly was evident.
So, once again why was the process so slothful? Is it a case that all the relevant agencies locally were not appraised i.e. (then) Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports, Chief Immigration Officer and possibly the Guyana Olympic Association?
Finally, with an extended administrative arm of management of the Golden Jaguars, involuntarily and a Normalization committee, this essential component of collective minds has failed our nation. Since the issue is in the public domain, let “John Public” judge them accordingly and submit relevant pronouncements. Let the “chips fall” in the rightful place, as the blame game for the election period is totally unacceptable.
