There seems to be some confusion surrounding just who the new Youth Director under the Department of
Culture, Youth and Sport might be.
While former AFC Parliamentarian, Trevor Williams, had been tipped as the new Youth Director and has even spoken with the media from the post, the Ministry of Education is maintaining that no such appointment has yet been made.
The assertions were made by Minister within the Ministry, Nicolette Henry who told reporters yesterday that while Williams was up for consideration for the position, he was in no way the Youth Director yet.
“Mr. Trevor Williams has not been appointed; he doesn’t even have a letter of appointment,” Henry emphasised. She explained that interviews are currently being conducted and she understood that Williams is being considered.
Since news of the appointments of the Directors of Sport and Youth made its way around, concerns were expressed in the public domain that the positions were being filled by persons closely linked with the APNU+AFC coalition. Henry yesterday confirmed that Christopher Jones, an APNU member, was the new Director of Sport while Williams was “earmarked” for the other position.
When these concerns were raised by this publication, Henry said that various mechanisms are in place for any employment that is being made. “We’re going to be using a mechanism that is allowable; that is all I can provide you at this point in time,” she said.
She added that the process will include “some amount of transparency”. She said, too, that the media will
be provided with information on how the appointments were made in due time.
Henry maintained that opportunities existed for a “broad cross-section of persons to be employed” and not just those linked to the coalition. She pointed out that there are several vacancies within the Ministry, including 6 senior positions that are vacant within her Department. She clarified that these positions were vacant before she even took over. “Those positions are going to be filled by persons some of whom you don’t even know, because they are not affiliated with the party,” Henry said.
However, despite Henry’s “clarifications”, there is strong indication that Williams has already gained the Youth Director position.
Late last week, the Ministry of Education issued a press invite to yesterday’s conference. In the correspondence, it was stated, “two new appointees to the Ministry, Christopher Jones and Trevor Williams, will also be attending the press conference.” Neither Jones nor Williams were present for the meeting.
When this correspondence was shown to Henry for further clarifications, the Minister maintained that her earlier words were correct. She also implied that a misunderstanding might have arisen resulting in the incorrect information being transmitted.
“I had said to my staff that these are people who will eventually be on board with us…but right now Mr. Williams is being considered,” Henry said.
Since last week, Williams had been interviewed for the Youth Director post on at least two separate occasions, and spoke on his plans for the area. In fact, numerous persons congratulated Williams on his Facebook page and, in turn, he thanked them and did not refute the appointment.
Williams could not be reached yesterday for a comment.
For years, Williams has been known as an advocate for the youths of Guyana and has spoken out on several occasions for the need for more attention to be placed on the group.
