Five Dominicans, four Colombians and two Venezuelans were yesterday arraigned in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts; six of them were illegal immigrants and the other five were charged for overstaying their time
in Guyana.
The women appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry- Sewnarine. They were accompanied by an interpreter, from the Central Immigration Office during the court hearing, since they could not speak English.
It was alleged that Franchelys Torres, Yesenia Ariza, Mari Riviera, Yourlenny Hernandez, Mary Riviera, and Melanie Rodriguez came to Guyana between February and May via sea and disembarked without the consent of an immigration officer.
One the contrary, Magaly Perez, Genchi Perez, Nathalie Acosta, Carolina Acosta and Ana Nejia came to Guyana between February and May, and breached the conditions of their permit. They were permitted to stay for a period of time however, they subsequently overstayed.
All the women pleaded guilty to the charges and were fined $30,000 fine with an alternative of two weeks imprisonment.
On Sunday, the women were subsequently picked up by the Counter Trafficking in Person Unit of Social Protection and the Guyana Women Miners’ Organisation (GWMO) during an investigation into human trafficking.
Heading the raid was the newly appointed Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection, Simona Broomes. The team scoured Bartica, two bars/hotels on First Avenue and the homes of the girls were also raided.
After investigations were carried out the illegal women were detained and interrogated at the Bartica Police station then later taken to the Georgetown Magistrates Courts, where they were indicted.
