Guyanese boxers suffered a jolting blow to their hopes of qualifying for the Pan American Boxing Championships, slated for Toronto Ontario Canada in early July, when two of them registered unfortunate losses on the first day of the qualifying championships in Tijuana Mexico last Thursday evening.
Delon Charles (56kgs) and Dewani Lampkin (60kgs) were early casualties after surrendering their respective bouts to Tafari Ebanks (Cayman Islands) and Kevin Luna (Guatemala). Blake said that he was somewhat disappointed by the turn of events. He lauded the efforts of both of the boxers and even hinted that they had done enough to gain the nod.
However, Blake said that he has identified some flaws in the boxers’ armory that is in need of urgent attention. “Ebanks’ approach to the fight and the way he applied his game plan might have been the decisive factor in the judges awarding him the bout,” Blake suggested. He admitted that there is a need to rearrange the training applications so that the local boxers should derive a firmer understanding of just what is necessary in the international arena as against the local scene.
Blake also sees a need for Guyanese boxers to venture outside of their comfort zone locally and seek international exposure. “Just imagine the Trinidadians had travelled to Cuba to participate in their championships during their preparations yet they (Trinidadians) lost three fights on the first night,” said Blake. He pointed out that local boxers were restricted to competition around the Caribbean with Thomas being the only boxer to have travelled further afield (Chile, Kazakhstan and French Guiana). He said that he upon his return to Guyana plans to have discussions with the executive of the GBA with an aim of engaging government officials to improve the lot of local boxers in future championships.
Meanwhile, Blake said that Guyana’s final hopes of qualifying now rest with Thomas and Phillips. Both pugilists were scheduled to box last evening; Phillips will face off with Nelsom Diaz, while Thomas will oppose Aron Prince. They are the last hope of Guyana earning a place in Toronto Ontario Canada. Those results will appear in a subsequent edition.
