Well placed sources in the new government have said that the Government Information Agency (GINA) owes the Guyana Chronicle over $70M for advertisements placed.
This amount, the source said, accumulated over time and GINA kept refusing to pay citing shortage of funds. But Chronicle continued to allocate space for advertisements.
GINA cited financial problems despite the fact that in recent years, it invested some 250M for the production and printing of the controversial “The Guyanese” in the United States.
Earlier this year, questions were raised about the money spent by GINA to produce the newspaper for circulation in New York but the state-owned entity remained silent on the cost.
Instead, GINA set about to deflect the issue by accusing Kaieteur News of telling lies.
Leader of Alliance of Change (AFC), Khemraj Ramjattan, who is now the Minister of Public Security, had raised questions about the publication of the fortnightly newspaper.
Ramjattan had condemned the fact that taxpayers are made to pay for a newspaper that carries nothing but praises to the People’s Progressive Party government.
He also raised questions over spending by GINA’s Head, Neaz Subhan, and former government official, Kwame McCoy.
The cost to produce the paper was put at almost $2M every fortnight for 5,000 copies of the newspaper printed in New York.
Ramjattan had vowed to launch an investigation into reports that GINA and Government spent up to $250M to start up the newspaper.
GINA continues to refuse to disclose the exact cost for the paper. On Tuesday, when Kaieteur News contacted Subhan about the cost he again refused to provide the figures. Subhan said, “I will not comment on that (the cost); that is an internal matter,”
About a month ago, when the issue was raised, Subhan had issued a statement saying, “All GINA would say is that it rejects the Kaieteur News’ mischievous assertion with regards to the sum spent on “The Guyanese” newspaper, and is not unmindful of the numerous inaccuracies contained in the article.” (Abena Rockcliffe)
