The bullet-riddled body of a 40-year-old farm labourer was found yesterday at Tain Settlement, Corentyne, two days after he was believed to have escaped an attack on a camp by a gun-toting man.
Police said that the decomposing remains of Sasenarine Baljit, 40, of Clifton Settlement, Port Mourant, Corentyne, were found at about 07:00 hrs in a trench in the Tain Backdam, Corentyne.
The body bore what appeared to be shotgun injuries. It is alleged that Baljit and Navendra Permaul, 39, of Port Mourant, Corentyne, were at a camp on Wednesday when a man from another camp shot at them.
While it was reported that Permaul was shot and injured, it was reported that Baljit had escaped.
Rice and cattle farmer Sheldon Leiso called ‘Shelly’ of Port Mourant, reported to police that he was at home around on 17:00 hrs last Wednesday when he received a call that one of his workmen was shot in the backdam.
On arriving at the scene, he met his injured worker, Navendra Permaul, who said he had come under attack.
The man said that he and Baljit were in their camp at around 21:00 hrs when one ‘Sakawat,’ who was employed by an individual known as ‘Son,’ entered the camp. The intruder reportedly had a shotgun.
Permaul stated that both he and Baljit began to run and ‘Sakawat’ opened fire, shooting Permaul in the right foot while ‘Frying Pan’ ran away.
Permaul was admitted in stable condition at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
A search was mounted for Baljit, but it was not until yesterday that his bullet-riddled body was found.
A sister of Baljit’s said she seldom saw her sibling, and last saw him about four months ago.
She subsequently received word at around 15:00 hrs yesterday that her brother’s remains had been found.
The body was taken to the Ramoo Funeral Parlour.
