– van Lange captures 10 Gold, achieves 5 Records as she says goodbye
Britany van Lange has said goodbye to local swimming for now as she is heading
to the USA to study at the best United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point. It is an exceptional honor reserved for the most promising students in the world.
At West Point, more than excellent grades are needed, in addition to intelligence, outstanding character and being physically fit is needed. The disciplined van Lange said that she will be away for about four years but before leaving wanted to compete at the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) Independence National Long Course Championships which concluded on Tuesday last having splashed off on May 29 at the National Aquatic Centre, Liliendaal.
She entered a total of 10 events in the Girls 18 and Over category winning Gold in every race, dropping 3 records and setting 2 in the process. The records which fell were the 50m Freestyle and the 200m IM which were held by Noelle Smith along with the 100m Freestyle which had belonged to Soroya Simmons.
The new records set were in the 200m Breaststroke and the 400m IM which was one of the last events that brought the championships to a close. She {van Lange} did it the way champions do when they leave; they leave with their names in the record book.
The entire swimming fraternity and friends of van Lange are expressing best wishes to one of the best swimmers of her generation. Britany van Lange holds the distinction of being the first female and the youngest to represent Guyana in swimming at the Olympics Games, London 2012. Her long time Coach has been Stephanie Fraser of the Dorado Speed Swim Club.
