Alonzo Ambrose withstood fierce rivalry to capture the first stage of the annual three-stage Independence cycle road race which commenced yesterday.
Ambrose clocked one hour, 41 minutes and 24 seconds to win the leg which pedaled off with 43 starters from Corriverton Police Station enroute to New Amsterdam (46.6miles) just ahead of Ian Jackson and Akeem Arthur in that order.
Stephen Fernandes, Orville Hinds, Michael Anthony, Marlon Williams, Raul Leal, Akeem Wilkinson and Paul De Nobrega completed the top ten correspondingly.
Ambrose captured two primes, while Andrew Hicks, Jamal John, Gerron Williams took one each.
Michael Anthony outsprinted his opponents to capture the second stage which began with 39 riders at 14:30 hrs from Rosignol, West Bank Berbice and finished at Carifesta Avenue in Georgetown.
Anthony, Hinds, Raul Leal, Gerron Williams and Ambrose dominated much of the proceedings and with just over 300 meters to go, Anthony, Hinds and Leal separated themselves from the others, however Anthony maintained his pace to cross the finish line moments ahead of Hinds and Leal respectively, in a time of 2 hours, 18 minutes and 51 seconds; both Hinds and Leal clocked the said time as Anthony. Geron Williams finished fourth in 2 hours 22 minutes and 51 seconds, while fifth place Ambrose ended in 2 hrs, 24 minutes and 36 seconds.
The third and final stage commences today at 08:30 hrs from Linden and concludes at Homestretch Avenue. (Zaheer Mohamed)
