As the foundation is being laid for the building of a working relationship between the Governments of Guyana and the United States of America, the focus of the new administration seems to be on policies as opposed to assistance.
This is according to the United States Embassy Charge’ d´Affaires, Bryan Hunt who described the government’s poise, at this time, as “a very good sign”.
Hunt said this during an exclusive interview with Kaieteur News at the US Embassy yesterday.
The envoy was asked to give insight into some of the appeals made by the governing A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) during the meetings he had with the coalition’s numerous government ministers.
Hunt confirmed that he met with President David Granger, his senior staff, as well as many government ministers, and “the Granger government is not standing there waiting for or seeking hand outs.”
He added, “They are not asking can you please give us this, can you please give us that; what they want to talk about is policy.”
The diplomat said that his meetings with the Granger administration were centred on the government’s vision for Guyana “where they think Guyana is going to go and where they believe Guyana can play a constructive role in the international community. So it wouldn’t be fair to the government to give the impression that they are asking for anything, because they are not.”
Hunt said that the government is currently having a “very mature” dialogue on foreign relations, which is done with an aim of highlighting shared interests.
He also noted, “We are talking about where they believe they want to change Guyanese policy. They are seeking out the international community’s view on what they might do that will be helpful, broadly, in our shared objectives.”
The Charge’ d´ Affaires offered kudos to the new administration as he said “I think they have conducted themselves so far in a very mature, very professional manner.”
He said that the composure of the new government signals well for the future foreign relationship not just with the United States of America but with the broader international community.
