…first in nearly 3 years
Apparently ready to change her highly controversial ways, Acting Town Clerk Carol Sooba attended her first management meeting with Mayor Hamilton Green, two days after a new administration took control of Guyana.
The attendance was Sooba’s first in nearly three years. The meeting saw a high level of participation from other officials of the City Council, something that had been unprecedented in the past due to division within the body.
The management meeting was held early yesterday morning and was chaired by Mayor Green.
Heads of Department had been present for the meeting.
If one had not looked carefully, Sooba might have been missed in her sober black and white work outfit.
The usually vocal Sooba was noticeably hushed and while those in attendance aired their concerns on the way forward, she maintained her decorum and listened respectfully as Mayor Green took control of the proceedings.
During the lengthy meeting, Green opined that it was time for all persons involved to play their roles adequately and efficiently.
“I didn’t want to say it but it may be opportune for me to say that this new dispensation means that it will be unacceptable for us to tolerate square pegs in round holes and persons who don’t seem to know their place and responsibilities. That will be completely unacceptable.”
In an interview following the meeting, Green said that he will be writing to the new Minister of Local Government and Regional Development (LGRD) in relation to Sooba and will also be waiting for the establishment of the Local Government Service Commission.
“She [Sooba] has committed so many violations that (have) to be taken into consideration,” Green said.
He emphasised that he will not be “witch hunting” though he had previously restrained persons who had wanted to physically remove Sooba because “she’s really been abominable.”
Nonetheless, he said, “We’re getting on with the job of reconstructing the Council.” He continued, “We’re taking the proper legal and administrative route. The President has asked us to do things the right way and that’s what we’re doing…
“I want to use the legal means so that nobody can say we’re irresponsible. But she’ll be gone and we have to find people who will do the work.”
He added that though Sooba attended the meeting, he had simply ignored her. She is still acting in her capacity.
For years, Green and Sooba have been butting heads over the administration of the City Council. Sooba’s appointment as Town Clerk had been fiercely objected to, with critics claiming that she was not qualified for the position.
Sooba had also been accused of being placed within the Council by the then ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) administrative to hinder the council’s administration.
Sooba’s attendance comes two days after APNU+AFC leader David Arthur Granger was sworn in as the eighth executive President of Guyana, ousting the PPP from a 23- year rule.
