– Looking forward to WCQ
By Franklin Wilson
Having made a impact in his first game for the Golden Jaguars when he scored against Barbados on February 1 last in a 2-2 draw, Canadian based forward Emery Welshman is now plying his trade at the Real Monarchs
FC which competes in the US Soccer Federation, Second Division.
The 23 year-old Welshman signed up with the club as a result of a successful preseason with their parent club Real Salt Lake.
In an interview with Kaieteur Sport, Welshman said he is enjoying his new city of Salt Lake Utah where he aims to continue development of his professional career.
“And to gain much needed experience with my new team. I aiming to also help the team gain success and make playoffs.”
With Guyana preparing for its first World Cup Qualifying game against St. Vincent & the Grenadines (away and home) in CONCACAF Second Round qualifying for the FIFA World Russia 2018, Welshman said he is looking forward to these matches.
“I feel extremely blessed to be part of the Golden Jaguars. It has been a great experience to play international football for my parent’s birth country and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. Scoring against Barbados in my debut with the national team was a dream come true, it was a very surreal feeling.”
The dapper forward expressed excitement ahead of the WCQ noting that Guyana has the potential of assembling a very strong team.
“I am happy for the opportunity and my main focus is to be selected for the squad that will travel and helping the team succeed in any way that I can.”
Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz had informed that the Senior Squad is likely to come together mid this month with all the players to fine tune preparations for next month. Guyana will be away to St. Vincent & the Grenadines at the Arnos Vale Stadium on June 10 from 15:30hrs in the afternoon.
The return game will be played at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, on Sunday June 14 from 19:00hrs. The Olympic Under-23 squad is also training and will continue a series of weekend camps this weekend.
