Everyone wants to go to heaven, but no one wants to die. But as a people we cannot have it both ways. Christians are told by their Pastors about the wonders of heaven, where they will have a good spiritual and eternal life.
Most men of the Cloth preach that heaven is a beautiful place, but they themselves are in no hurry to get there. Implicit in their preaching is a declaration of the fear of death as well as those pastors’ unwillingness to die. Most preachers believe that as much as the world is screwed-up, yet for them, life is beautiful and that living on Earth is a wonderful experience.
And as tantalizing as going to heaven appears, there is no hurry for them to pursue the path of the great unknown.
Given mankind’s fear of the unknown, there are preachers who never miss an opportunity to warn sinners of the coming of the Lord and to repent if they want to go to heaven. True or false, their goal is to invoke fear on a captivated congregation. Such behaviour resonates with many Christians in today’s world. But it is unfathomable to know how so many of us continue to operate in a vacuum by latching on to weird theories of success.
We hear of the development of prosperous societies and dream of becoming one. Most times, however, we fantasize without understanding the journey that leads to prosperity or the unpleasantness of the bitter journey in pursuit of the development, advancement and success.
By way of illustration, this brings one to the current socio-economic challenges facing Guyana, and the need for overall restraints, but more pointedly, for reasonableness from the new Coalition administration.
To begin with, society has not been fair in its treatment of the poor. Admittedly, this was the mantra of the APNU+AFC Coalition amidst the height of the election campaign. The intent was to score political points to win the election and make plans to go to Guyana’s political heaven—the government.
However, little did they know that dying is a prerequisite for transitioning into Guyana’s political heaven? The PPP died a timely death on May 11and only time will tell if it could resurrect from the death.
Unlike any other contemporary politician in Guyana, at least that I am aware of, David Granger has promised deliverance to the people by winning the election. While on the other hand, Donald Ramotar followed in the footsteps of the former president with empty promises and lost the election. He did not repent or ask for forgiveness for his sins and those of his government.
It matters that Granger had the full support from some prominent businessmen and the fact that he spoke about a bright future for all Guyanese as openly and as frankly as he did during the campaign, and at the time that he did, deserved commendation.
He told the nation the truth about his economic, fiscal and human development plans that await the arrival of the APNU+AFC Coalition government. In this regard, such honesty should become the template to which future politicians subscribe.
Admittedly, everybody wants to go to heaven, but no one wants to die. Sometimes martyrs emerge to save the day for millions. But Granger is not a martyr. Make no bones about it, one can point fingers to the APNU+AFC Coalition that is responsible for the defeat of the PPP, but the unfettered truth is that during the campaign, the Coalition united the people around a common agenda.
However, doing too much too early amidst dwindling revenue inflows without solving the issue of corruption and crime will not cut it. Everybody wants to go to heaven, but no one wants to die is an instructive axiom.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
