The leadership of the Alliance For Change (AFC) yesterday met with representatives of the Carter Center who are in Guyana to observe General and Regional Elections which are to be held today.
AFC’s meeting with the mission was held in the absence of former US President Jimmy Carter who had just taken ill and had returned to the US.
Members of the Center questioned AFC about its concerns about the elections process thus far.
According to Khemraj Ramjattan, AFC leaders inclusive of himself, Cathy Hughes and Moses Nagamootoo expressed that they are overall supportive of the process thus far.
However, he said that AFC made it known that the Party has concerns with the abuse of state resources and pointed out the state media as one such resource. Ramjattan said that the Party noted that ads from the coalition were by the state-owned National Communication refused and a frivolous excuse was offered.
He said that the “bloated voters list” was pointed out and so were the party’s concerns about the People’s Progressive Party’s use of the race card during public meetings in a bid to win votes.
Ramjattan said that his team also pointed out that the incumbent Party utilized a number of persons who are supposed to be neutral office holders such as ambassadors, Permanent Secretaries and heads of state entities, such as Guyoil and GuySuCo.
Ramjattan told Kaieteur News that the meeting was a fruitful one.
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter arrived in Guyana on Friday in advance of today’s General and Regional elections but fell ill and had to leave.
