A couple was yesterday granted bail after pleading not guilty to an unlawful possession of firearm accessory
charge at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Letisha Garraway of Lot 40 Blueberry Hill, Wismar, Linden, and Aden Bowen, 26, of Lot 20 Blueberry Hill, Wismar, Linden, denied the allegation, which stated that on May 5, at Blueberry Hill, they had in their possession a .32 magazine, without being holders of a firearm licence.
The charge was read to them by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Prosecutor Sean Gonsalves told the court that on the day in question, the police, acting on information received, went to the home of Bowen and conducted a search in his presence. It was during the search that the ammunition was found. His girlfriend was also present at the home when the search was carried out.
However, the duo’s attorney claimed that Bowen was badly beaten by the police while in custody. The lawyer alleged that a plastic bag was also placed over Bowen’s face. The court was also told that the defendants share a visiting relationship and they were not allowed to give statements when the police arrested them.
Bail was opposed by the prosecution, because the defence failed to advance special reasons.
However, the objection was overruled by the magistrate and the defendants were ordered to post bail of $125,000 each.
The matter will be called again on May 13, at the Linden Magistrate’s Courts.
