– Army chief tell PSC
The Private Sector Commission (PSC) met on Wednesday with the Chairman of the Joint Services, Chief-of-Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, Brigadier Mark Phillips, and his team to discuss Monday’s elections and
other issues.
“The Chief of Staff updated the executives of the Commission on the role and preparations of the Joint Services for the maintenance of law and order during the elections period. The Joint Services Chairman emphasized that the Guyana Police Force is responsible for security and maintenance of law and order on elections day, and in general, and that the role of the Guyana Defence Force will be to support the Guyana Police Force upon the request of the Commissioner of Police,” a PSC statement said.
Troops have been deployed and confined to barracks in all police divisions across the country and will be ready to support the police if the need arises.
According to the army chief, the Joint Services are prepared for both preventative and preemptive actions.
“Brigadier Phillips assured the Private Sector members that the Guyana Defence Force is a professional organization and will only operate within the guidelines of the Constitution of Guyana and the Defence Force Act,” the PSC said.
