A week after giving police a statement and a recording of the confrontation between herself and former Health Minister Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, activist Sherlina Nageer still doesn’t know what action investigators will take against Ramsaran for the verbal abuse that led to him being relieved of his duties.
Nageer gave Crime Chief Leslie James a statement last week Monday and handed over the recording of Dr. Ramsaran’s “slap and strip” threats the following day. The activist said that she also gave Mr. James the names of three eyewitnesses to the incident.
But “we are investigating the matter” was all James would say yesterday when asked whether police have questioned Ramsaran.
It was on April 20 that Dr. Ramsaran was recorded outside the Whim Magistrate’s Court telling Nageer to “F off”, and referring to her as a “little piece of s**t.” He was also recorded saying that he would have her “slapped for the fun of it,” and saying he could “have some of my women strip her.”
This occurred after Nageer queried the Health Minister’s presence outside the Whim Magistrate’s Court with other PPP supporters in support of former President Bharrat Jagdeo.
Even after issuing an apology, Dr. Ramsaran was later recorded labeling Nageer a “miscreant,” and saying that she was in need of “psychiatric help.”
He was roundly condemned for his statements and President Donald Ramotar eventually relieved Dr. Ramsaran of his Ministerial duties. He has been replaced by Dr. Jennifer Westford, the country’s current Minister of Public Service.
But Nageer has made it clear that she was not appeased by the action taken against Ramsaran.
The human rights activist has been conducting picketing exercises outside various public offices including the Ministry of Health, and the chambers of the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall.
Nageer maintained that there are too many other ministers and public officers who indulge in the abuse of power and menacing behaviour that are yet to be sanctioned by the administration.
She pointed specifically to Attorney General (AG) Anil Nandlall, who had issued threats to Kaieteur News, while soliciting a female journalist for his uncle.
