As the date for General and Regional elections draws near, non-governmental organizations are openly throwing support behind the political forces that seem to be best for Guyana. One such organization is one calling itself A New Guyana.
The organization is independent and is supporting the APNU+AFC coalition in the 2015 General Elections.
It recently placed a prominent advertisement in Guyana’s leading newspaper, the Kaieteur News.
It reflected a call on all Guyanese not to let “the past chains shackle us from realizing our full potential as a nation.”
In the advertisement, the organization pointed out that many first world countries are being effectively run by coalition governments and noted that many other countries are looking into such form of governance.
A New Guyana noted that the Indian government run by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a coalition government and so is the British government of Prime Minister David Cameron.
The advertisement continued, “The German government with Chancellor Angela Markel is a coalition government.
The Canadian government ran by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, as well as that of Japan ran by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, were all coalition.
Bringing it closer to home, A New Guyana pointed out that the Trinidad and Tobago government, being run by Prime Minister Kamla Persaud Bissesar, is a coalition government.
Joey Jagan, the son of the late President Cheddi Jagan, who is often referred to as the father of the nation, was quoted in the advertisement saying that his father was a believer of coalition politics.
He stated that the Civic component of the People’s Progressive Party is a living testament to such belief.
Sections of society have expressed confidence in the coalition based on the fact that if any of the parties forming the coalition acts in violation of the constitution, the will of the masses, morals or the law, the other parties are there to sanction.
The Alliance for Change (AFC) had told its supporters that it will not allow the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) to do as it likes and APNU made a similar commitment in the reverse.
On February 14, the two political bodies joined forces in a bid to take over the reigns of government in Guyana.
The union is steered by an agreement named the Cummingsburg Accord. This document stipulates the rights and expectation of both the AFC and APNU.
The document has been so drafted that no party has dominating powers.
