Two ranks from the Guyana Police Force will soon be given their marching orders after they were found guilty of corrupt practice, stemming from investigations into a matter at Kurupung earlier this year.
The ranks, who escaped criminal charges, were tried departmentally and convicted yesterday, according to reports reaching this newspaper.
However, there are reports that the ranks, who have a total of 25 years’ service, were denied the chance to appeal the decision although they had indicated their intention to do so.
The ranks were charged after the Police Office of Professional Responsibility concluded investigations, which resulted from reports that the two ranks had arrested 12 men on January 12, last, in relation to the possession of an unlicensed shotgun and nine cartridges.
It is alleged that the two cops took a bribe to free the men.
Kaieteur News was informed that the two ranks a Detective Corporal attached to the Bartica Police Station and another Corporal stationed at Kurupung were accused of demanding a $3M bribe to release suspects following the firearm bust at Kurupung.
The ranks are contending that no proper investigation was carried out; hence, no criminal proceeding could be proffered against them.
They are also claiming bias on the part of the trial officer for their current predicament.
A source close to the ranks told Kaieteur News that it is very strange that while the ranks were charged departmentally, the persons who claimed ownership of the firearms and ammunition have never been placed before the courts.
