Linden Guinness ‘Greatest of de Streets’ Competition…
Attackers ensured that new champions will be crowned in this year’s Linden segment
of the Guinness ‘Greatest of de Streets’ Competition after defeating last year’s title holders Eagles on penalty kicks on Wednesday night at the Mackenzie Market Tarmac.
The two teams had played to an exciting 1-1 stalemate in regulation period, before the former champs succumbed 2-0 in the penalty shootout. Former champs Silver Bullets were in no mood to become one of the opening night casualties after displaying unerring accuracy in their clash against High Stars who they blasted 4-1.
Colwyn Drakes breached the defence on four occasions, netting in the sixth, ninth, 14th and 17th minutes, while Jermaine Adams 18th minute strike was the lone response for High Stars. Last year’s beaten finalist Retrieve Unknown survived a tough encounter, before squeezing past Ripping Bullets 1-0 with Stephon Tappin’s ninth minute effort separating the teams.
Commacka then made sure that they were not going to be another victim of the night by claiming responsibility for the departure of Exodus following a 4-0 triumph. Rondel Edmonson became the second player of the night to net a helmet trick after scoring in the fourth, eighth, 13th and 17th minutes.
Half Mile/One Mile showed little mercy in their 4-1 demolition of Goal-Getters with Rawle Gittens leading the way with a first half brace that came in the fifth and eighth minutes, while Steve Brewley and Shawn Gittens 14th and 18th minutes strikes respectively completed their tally.
Quincy Black was the solitary marksman for the losers. Amelia’s Ward Russians edged South Stars 1-0 with the experienced Travis Waterton’s seventh effort being responsible for their opponent’s demise in the final fixture of the evening.
Play in the competition resumes this evening with eight matches at the same venue. In the opening fixture, Cherokee Park tackles Classic-6 from 18:00hrs and that will be followed by the encounter between Aliku and Minibus from 18:30hrs.
