Police are investigating the murder of recently released prisoner Sean Ricardo Pestano, 50, who died at the Port Mourant Hospital, East Berbice, Corentyne, yesterday.
Pestano, who was sentenced to three years imprisonment on a drug trafficking charge, was allegedly killed yesterday following an argument with 21-year –old Lerone La Rose who is said to be of unsound mind.
According to reports, Pestano was drinking with friends, including the alleged killer when the two got into a heated argument.
The dispute escalated and Pestano is reported to have attacked La Rose. The 21- year-old then fled the scene and returned with a cutlass, and inflicted two chops to Pestano’s left leg.
This newspaper was told that Pestano’s leg injuries were so severe that parts of his knee cap were ‘hanging out’. The 50 year-old was subsequently picked up by bystanders and rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Relatives of the 21 year-old told this newspaper that he has a history of mental illness and have repeatedly sought the help of authorities in having him admitted for treatment.
“We kept making reports to the police that my nephew (La Rose) was a madman,” said Rose Harry, an aunt of the accused, “he had been walking around with the cutlass all the time and when we would go to the police to get help nothing would happen.”
The suspect is in police custody as investigations continue.
