A 19-year-old mother of one is now fighting for her life at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), after she was allegedly shot in the abdomen by a male police friend, while playing a game of Russian roulette at her Lot 30 Albouys Street, Albouystown home.
The injured young woman has been identified as Sheqqenna Anderson, and according to relatives and friends who were nearby when the incident occurred around noon yesterday, Anderson invited three police ranks clad in blue and black uniforms into her home, after one of them requested to use the bathroom.
They were reportedly were on foot patrol duty in the Albouystown area at that time.
One of the young woman’s relatives present at the time of the shooting told Kaieteur News that the policeman who allegedly fired the shot had a .38 revolver with an empty barrel. He then took a live round from one of the other officers present, placed it into the barrel and decided to play a dangerous game of Russian roulette.
In recounting the final moments before Anderson was shot, the relative said, “She [Sheqqenna] went stand up by the window. He come in and he start playing with the gun. I turn and tell he that I ain’t playin with no gun cause gun don’t have eyes, and I left to go in the bedroom. By the time I reach the door all I hear was “POW! and when I come out I see she holding her belly.”
Kaieteur News was told that when the police rank realised that his friend was wounded, he got scared and ran away from the scene.
A woman, who identified herself as Sheqqenna’s great aunt, told this newspaper that one of the other two police ranks that were present at the time of the shooting ran after the alleged shooter, while the other stayed with the wounded woman, and eventually rushed her to the Accident and Emergency Unit of GPHC.
“He run away, drop the gun on Sussex Street and his other colleague that was chasing him found the gun and took it to the Brickdam Police Station,” a relative recalled.
Anderson’s relatives and friends could not confirm the identity of the alleged shooter. When this newspaper contacted Commander of ‘A’Division Clifton Hicken, he said that he was aware that a girl was allegedly shot by a police rank and investigations into the matter are on-going.
In a press release, Police Public Relations and Press Officer, Ivelaw Whittaker stated that the other two ranks are under close arrest as investigations continue.
