A father of two is feared drowned after the boat that was manned by an unlicenced captain overturned at around 17.30 hours on Saturday at Batavia, Cuyuni.
Up to press time relatives and the police were searching for the body of Ivor Haynes of Cuyuni.
Haynes was travelling with his brother-in-law, Peter Pollard, who was piloting the vessel, and Pollard’s 16-year-old nephew, when the mishap occurred.
Pollard, who has been detained, told Kaieteur News they were travelling down a waterfall after returning from Arawak Creek, when the boat engine stopped and the vessel capsized.
“Before the boat capsize, my nephew plunge overboard and swim and hold onto a rock. I also hold onto a rock and I see Ivor fighting up with his (metal) detector and I shout and tell him to loose it, and he holler and tell me that he can’t make it,” the boat captain said.
He said he saw Haynes going down the falls. “That was the last time I saw him,” Pollard said.
Pollard added that he and his nephew clung to a rock for hours, while waiting to be rescued.
But no one came and sometime after midnight, they decided to swim for help.
“We swim past island after island until we reach Kamaria road and a guy took us out back to search for him (Ivor) but we didn’t find him.”
Pollard said that the boat which capsized had a 15 horse power engine and it was his personal vessel.
He said that he couldn’t use a bigger boat because the water in the area was too shallow.
Both Pollard and Ivor are prospectors.
Pollard, who is not a licenced captain, said that while it is the first time he ever experienced such a tragedy, four years ago he had a near death experience.
He explained that the boat he was piloting back then sank in the Cuyuni River and he, along with three other Brazilains fell overboard.
They were all rescued.
