Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) sprint ace, Rupert Perry returned to form
yesterday following an accident related absence from track and field with a scintillating performance that ignited stories of his dominance on the local circuit prior to his hiatus.
Perry blasted 10.1 seconds in the Male 100m on the synthetic facility yesterday during the ‘mini-meet’ that marked the opening of Guyana’s first rubberised track. Kevin Abbensetts was second in 10.3 seconds while Tevin Garraway (10.5) was third.
Rising sprint phenom, Kenisha Phillips brushed aside a quality field in the Female 100m race in a time of 11.3 seconds. Anika Powley raced to 11.6 seconds, while Cassie Small (11.8) was third in the historic first two marquee sprint events on the track.
Cassey George, who was perhaps denied another two CARIFTA gold medals at the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) did not field a local team because of flight issues, ran 2:13.8 in a dominant performance in the Women’s 800m race. Andrea foster (2:17.2) was second and Claudrice Mckoy (2:24.7) finished third in that race.
Cleveland Forde then produced an incredible performance to win the Male 1500m race in 4:02.0. Forde trailed for most of the race before motoring past Cleveland Thomas (4:06.8) and Winston
Missenger (4:07.1) on the penultimate back straight for a comfortable victory.
Natricia Hooper won the female 400m race in 56.5 seconds ahead of Avon Samuels (57.1) and
Phillips (59.8) respectively. Shawn Semple (49.9) won the male race with Devon Barrington (50.2) and Quincy Clementson (50.9) second and third respectively. (Edison Jefford)
