Scotiabank Bartica Branch, made a donation of $50,000 to the Bartica Regatta Committee yesterday. Branch Manager Carlos Prowell told Kaieteur News that it is an annual undertaking. Lennox Fredericks collected the cheque on behalf of the committee.
This “giving back” initiative was preceded by a face-lifting activity at Agatash Primary School sometime last month. After being involved in community service for a number of years, Scotiabank embarked on an initiative to give back to Bartica. The exterior of the school was repainted by the bank’s staffers.
Prowell said that Scotiabank has recognised that it has a corporate responsibility of giving back to the community, and it has been fifteen years since the bank opened its Bartica branch. He boasted that from the very beginning the entity has been participating in such activities. The staff would customarily partake in cleanups and repainting of road signs.
He explained that the staff went around the community to pinpoint “where a lacking of need is.” This was in an effort to assess what the next project would be, as a major project is done every quarter. Agatash Primary was one such “needy” location.
After talks with the Head Teacher who was very grateful for the initiative, it was agreed that the school would be the ideal project to begin with. Prowell said that it saved the school’s administration time and money. The exterior of what he described “a big school” was painted. It took some nine hours to get the job done.
According to Prowell, the project was made possible by a fund-raiser held by staff and contributions by the bank. He opined that “it is very good to contribute back to the community we (Scotiabank) do business in.”
