Berbice were in a comfortable position for first innings points against Demerara when the first day of their second round game of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/Raj Singh Insurance Brokers Inter County Under-19 three-day tournament concluded yesterday.
In reply to Berbice first innings score of 199, Demerara closed the day on 144-7 after 46.4 overs at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, Bourda. Mark Hamilton was lbw to Leon Andrews for 13 on the stroke of time, leaving Daniel Basdeo not out 24.
Tevin Imlach and Ronaldo Renee added 45 for the first wicket as the host reply got off to a fine start. Imlach slammed three four’s before he was lbw to Kassim Khan for 26 before Renee went for 18 leaving with the score at 57-2.
Sherfene Rutherford hit one four and a six before he was brilliantly caught at cover off Daniel Lewis for 15 while Askhaya Persaud was bowled by Balchan Baldeo for 14. Skipper Travis Persaud and Malcolm Hubbard soon fell for 21 and two respectively to leave their team in trouble at 111-6.
However Hamilton and Basdeo attempted to repair the damage as they shared in a 7th wicket stand of 33 before Berbice struck just before the close to further strengthen their control. Baldeo and Lewis have so far taken two wickets each.
Earlier, Berbice were bowled out in the second session off 41.2 overs. Rutherford who impressed with his pace trapped Baldeo (03) lbw at 21-1 before Leon Andrews and Shimron Hetmyer featured in a second wicket stand of 46. Andrews played a number of handsome drives, hitting three fours and one six before he was removed by Rutherford for 34.
Berbice then lost Hetmyer (05), Retesh Umroa (00) and Samuel Kishnasammy (04) in quick succession to be 84-6. But Parmanand Ramdan and Kassim Khan steadied the innings somewhat with a partnership of 48. Ramdan stroked the ball with power, cracking four fours and two sixes as he brought up his fifty off 38 deliveries.
But just after reaching the milestone he perished looking to hit Travis Persaud over the infield. Khan then shared in an eight-wicket stand of 35 with Lewis to prop up the total before they were both dismissed within a run of each other. Khan made 27 (3×4) and Lewis 26 (3×4).
Gresean Grant was left not out on 16 while Omar Weatherspoon was the last wicket to fall for 14. Rutherford was the pick of the bowlers with 4-40; Jayaden Mana had 2-23 and Basdeo 2-31. Play is set continue at 10:00hrs today.
